The M-170 is the Military version of the CJ6. It was used as an Ambulance & a troop hauler, a 20 gallon tank was added to the Jeep to get to the front lines & to the rearward areas without fueling up. The passenger side body was cut out to ease the loading of the wounded. The spare tire was also carried where the regular passenger sits in a Jeep now, it sat in a bucket like cradle. 1955-1964 M-170 Ambulance/Troop hauler. Front Line Ambulance Truck M-170 is designated as a special equipment vehicle as defined in AR 700-105.

Interior[]
The vehicle had a tailgate, unlike the WWII jeep which simply had a solid rear panel with the tiremount. The Tailgate was a postwar CJ6 feature and of course was helpful in loading; however the stretchers--up to four in back-- were loaded over the tailgate.Two were at tailgate level sitting on wheelwells and holders behind the seats; two more could be hung from steel straps which hung from the top hoops ( two u-shaped pipes ) and could be rotated out of the way.The elongated side door was intended to help in loading ; ambulance personnel quickly developed tricks of their own including putting the tire on the hood.
